REVIEW: JAWS’ ‘If It Wasn’t For My Friends, Things Could Be Different’

Written by Melissa Milsom

JAWS are back with another sample of their nostalgic indie summer sound. There’s no doubt that the Brummie band has a clear and consistent sound, reminiscent of some of our favourite bands (We’re thinking Catfish and the Bottlemen and Moose Blood had a baby).

After sitting down and taking in their new EP, it’s obvious why they chose ‘SWEAT’ as their lead single. Deftones come to mind amongst the hazy-sounding lyrics, twinkling guitar and bass-led pieces, setting the tone for what to follow.

Consisting of 5 tracks, the project takes a balanced approach to interpreted self-reflection, invoking questions surrounding the idea of self and who we choose to keep closest to us.

One track to note, ‘GET UP’ , is laced in a delicious mixture of reverb vocals and laid-back instrumental, adding a new meaning to slower-style indie rock. Completing the track is the catchy hook “I gotta get back up and carry, gotta get back up and carry on”.

An emotive showcase of sound, driven by a co-ordinating drum section and bass guitar, an EP that combines everything great about old-era Indie rock and everything new about the genre.

If It Wasn’t For My Friends, Things Could Be Different comes out on 15th September.
